TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diodes, Varistors (transient voltage surge suppressors), and MOVs (metal oxide varistors) are the three major components used for protecting electrical and electronic systems against various types of over-voltage events.

VDRS14T175BSE is a product of Diodes Incorporated, a leading manufacturer of semiconductor components. This Varistor is designed for protecting applications from damaging transients, as well as providing a mechanism for limiting system inrush current.

Working Principle of the VDRS14T175BSE Varistor:

This device works on the principle of voltage-dependent nonlinear resistance. It is basically a voltage-controlled resistor, which has a negative temperature coefficient of resistance. When the voltage across this Varistor increases, it passes greater current, thereby raising its temperature and consequently its resistance increases. This process continues until the resistance reaches its rated value and thereby it starts blocking the current. In other words, when the voltage reaches the Varistors threshold voltage, it starts behaving as an open circuit.

VDRS14T175BSE Varistor consists of semiconductor material with a positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (relative to nonlinear resistors). This material is two or three-dimensionally layered with alternating layers of heavily doped and lightly doped silicon. These alternating layers create an intrinsic high- and low-resistance junction field, which forms a series-parallel network in such a way that when a voltage is applied across this network, the current flow is limited even when the applied voltage increases. This way, the Varistor protects the system from high-voltage transients.

At normal working temperature and voltage, an open circuit is established between the anode and cathode of the VDRS14T175BSE. However, when an over-voltage is applied, the Varistor starts conducting current, thereby limiting the voltage applied on the system. Furthermore, when the over-voltage impulse is finished, the Varistor quickly reverts back to an open circuit, thereby preventing the system from over-heating.

In order to optimize the protection performance of the VDRS14T175BSE, it is highly recommended that it is connected in series with other similar Varistors with different voltage ratings. This helps in providing a higher level of protection to the system against over-voltage transients.
