The VLIN1616-02G-E3-08 is a low-leakage, fast-acting TVS diode. It is available in the E3-08 surface mount package with three high-performance diffusion areas. The VLIN1616-02G-E3-08 features an internal print during clamping operation that helps reduce EMI noise, as well as low clamping voltage and low leakage current (less than 1µA). It has a low capacitance of 5pF and low on-resistance of 2Ω typical, which helps minimize signal attenuation.
The VLIN1616-02G-E3-08 works by clamping the voltage at the breakdown voltage, Vbr, for transient voltages. When the voltage reaches Vac, the diode begins to conduct and the current through the diode increases rapidly. As the voltage continues to rise, the current reaches its peak, also known as peak pulse current (IPP). The diode then turns off and the voltage falls. The energy dissipated during this process is proportional to IPP2 X Rcl, where Rcl is the diode\'s clamping ratio.
The TVS diode also protects against over-voltages caused by transients. To protect against this, the diode is optimized with its internal structure to reduce EMI noise that can be caused by protection circuits that include parasitic diodes. The parasitic diodes are responsible for noise generation and refer to the internal diodes found inside the TVS diode that are activated under over-voltage conditions. These parasitic diodes are used for overvoltage protection and are designed to provide the same protection as the TVS diode, but with reduced noise levels.
