PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) is a device that helps to manage and control the voltage and current supply from a DC power source. PMICs come in many forms, from AC/DC converters, to Offline Switchers, to Buck and Boost, to Voltage Reference and Regulators, and many more. One of these AC/DC converter technologies is the VN1160-1-E. This application field and its working principle is explained in the following sections.
Application Field of VN1160-1-E
The VN1160-1-E is a Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) AC to DC converter. It was designed to be used in energy efficient lighting applications, while offering high efficiency, low power dissipation, and user-friendly programming. Its 3-phase rectifier bridge enables the system to achieve a wide input voltage range starting at 50Vrms to 180Vrms (85-277VAC). Furthermore, it offers wide output voltage selections, ranging from 10V to 550V and also enables current boost capability up to 3A.
Moreover, the VN1160-1-E possesses several features which make it a preferred AC/DC converter for lighting systems. Firstly, its unique Power Factor Correction (PFC) circuit is built with ZVS technology, allowing high power factor of over 0.99. Besides, due to its unique rectifier bridge configuration, the system can automatically detect the input voltage whether single-phase or three-phase, delivering high power levels too. Lastly, its high frequency operation plaforms make it suitable for applications like LED driver with P-L voltage up to 400V.
Working Principle of VN1160-1-E
The VN1160-1-EZero Voltage Switching AC/DC converter is based on only two active components, which are the Boost switch and the active rectifier bridge. There are two conduction paths in which the former is connected to the second primary winding of the transformer and the latter lead to the DC output terminals.
The operation of the converter is based on the Boost cycle and the diode rectifier circuit. During the Boost cycle, the primary side of the converter is in high frequency shuttle, forming a voltage on the secondary side of the transformer. Meanwhile, the secondary side of the transformer is connected to the rectifier bridge legs and a DC output is pulled from the output filter capacitor at the same time. Consequently, this process generates a DC voltage at the output as the integrated Boost switch provides the isolation of the transformer.
On the other hand, the integrated active rectifier bridge utilizes both the diode and MOS rectifier to achieve the bridging process. When the voltage at the secondary winding of the transformer is higher than the output voltage, top MOS rectifier will turn off and the integrated diode rectifier will conduct the output voltage. This process helps the system to maintain a near perfect input/output current ripple ratio, ensuring the conversion efficiency of the system.
