VN1160 Application Field and Working PrincipleVN1160 is a power management integrated circuits (PMIC) of the AC/DC converters, offline switchers. It supplies up to 2A continuous output current of output voltage from 3.3V to 12V. It offers a wide input voltage range of 4.75V to 90V, an internal operating frequency of 250kHz and implements an adjustable switching frequency up to 1MHz. Besides it has over temperature protection, under voltage lockout and other protection functions. With the high integration and low cost, VN1160 is widely used in many different kind of applications, such as automotive, medical, industrial, and consumer electronics etc. Many applications benefit from the high performance, wide input voltage range and low standby power dissipation of VN1160. The working principle of the VN1160 is based on the AC-DC buck converter topology. It is a hysteretic control topology featuring the simple switching controller and the power switch. To make the output voltage the correct value, the loop-controller measures the output voltage which is by a feedback voltage. The reference voltage is internally set, according to the output voltage that is desired. The average value at the error amplifier output is compared to the reference voltage to the error amplifier which provides the control signal to the power switch. The low power operation is realized by a soft start or constant off time (COT) architecture. At low input voltages, the cycle-by-cycle current limit decreases until the device reaches thermal equilibrium and the cycle-by-cycle current limit is held at the standard value. The COT architecture also reduces the component size by allowing the switching devices to repeatedly handle the maximum rated current. The protection functions of VN1160 include soft start, over output voltage protection (OVP), over temperature protection (OTP), over current protection (OCP) and under voltage lockout (UVLO). Soft start starts the inductor in a controlled manner. The OTP which prevents device from thermal overload is designed to ensure operation within the safe operating area and to protect the device from thermal damage. The OCP sets an upper limit to the output current and activates when overcurrent fault is detected. Lastly, the UVLO hysteresis sets the threshold voltage at which the converter operates normally. In summary, the VN1160 is a single-chip AC/DC converter with wide input voltage range and high performance. The device integrates a hysteretic control switching converter, protection functions and low standby power dissipation. It provides protection features such as soft start, over output voltage protection (OVP), over temperature protection (OTP), over current protection (OCP) and under voltage lockout (UVLO). The device is widely used among automotive, medical, industrial, and consumer electronics application.
