VN1160C-E Working Principle
The VN1160C-E is a fixed frequency, current-mode, primary-side regulated offline switcher from Vincotech. It is powered by a full-bridge rectifier, which supplies the primary-side ICs with current. The internal power MOSFET switches the primary side current in an on/off pattern according to the required output voltage. The output voltage is set using an external resistor (with a proper value of resistance) which is connected between the COMP pin and ground in order to create an inner-loop control system. The output-voltage regulation and feedback is achieved by monitoring the feedback voltage at the FB pin and then adjusts the duty-cycle of the internal switch accordingly, using a current sensing comparator.
This inner-loop control system works by creating a voltage drop across a particular, externally connected, resistor (with a proper value of resistance). When the output voltage drops, the voltage drop across the resistor increases which causes an increase in the input current and then the duty cycle of the internal power MOSFET. This increases the amount of time where the power MOSFET is present in the off-state, which then reduces the output voltage. Conversely, when the output voltage rises, the input current decreases and the duty cycle of the internal switch decreases and the output voltage rises again. By constantly monitoring the output voltage and modifying the duty cycle of the internal switch, the VN1160C-E is able to maintain a precise output voltage.
