Optoisolators refer to an electrical component comprising a light-emitting diode (LED) coupled to a phototransistor. The LED and phototransistor are connected in such a way that the LED will emit light when a voltage is applied to it, whereas the phototransistor will respond by producing a current in response to the light. An optoisolator, or optocoupler, is used as an interface between two electrical circuits when galvanic isolation must be maintained between them. This enables one circuit to communicate with an isolated circuit by using light-based signals, which can be stronger and faster than electrical signals. The VO3062-X006 is specifically designed as an optoisolator with triac, SCR output.
The VO3062-X006 optoisolator is constructed of a gallium arsenide infrared-emitting diode (IRED) optically coupled to a triac, SCR output integrated circuit (IC). The IRED provides a light-based input signal for the optocoupler, while the integral output transistor, consisting of a TRIAC and SCR, acts as a signal barrier for isolation. The TRIAC is a bidirectional switch and operates with AC power, while the SCR is a unidirectional switch designed for DC power. Thus, the VO3062-X006 provides optically isolated control of AC loads, such as incandescent lamps, heaters, solenoids, and AC motors, as well as DC loads, such as DC motors, relays, and solenoids.
The VO3062-X006 operates on an input voltage range of 24 Vac to 240 Vac and is designed to operate with a power range of 0.1 W to 25 W. The total current across the load should not exceed 5 amps. The TRIAC output can be triggered by forward or reverse current, depending on the direction of the electrical signal, and is able to switch signals up to 400 Hz. The SCR output can be activated with a control voltage of 3 VDC or higher and is able to switch a signal with a frequency of up to 100 kHz.
The VO3062-X006 operates in such a way that an input voltage is applied to the IRED. When this voltage reaches the threshold value, the IRED starts to produce light which is then transmitted to the TRIAC or SCR output, depending on the direction of the electrical signal. This trigger signal causes the TRIAC or SCR to open or close the circuit in order to switch a load. Besides, when the voltage controlling the TRIAC and SCR exceeds a certain value, the optocoupler stops transmitting the light signal and the switch will turn off.
Given all these features, the VO3062-X006 optoisolator is ideal for a variety of applications such as industrial motor control, industrial latching, light dimming, HVAC control, power conversion control and many other applications. The TRIAC and SCR, combined with the isolation offered by the optocoupler, offer an ideal choice to control power with electrical signals in a variety of systems and applications.
