The VO3063 optoisolator is ideally suited for triggering triacs or power SCRs in a variety of applications. It is a zero-crossing optoisolator, meaning that when connected to mains power the output will switch zero-crossing points, ensuring low EMI. By using current transformers with a control system, machine logic can be implemented with minimal interference from surrounding loads, ensuring noise-free Machinery Logic Control.

Application Field

VO3063 optoisolators are designed to provide isolation of low voltage, low speed logic signals from the primary 5-to-12 Vdc logic signals. This type of add-on protection prevents unwanted voltage spikes and transients from interfering with critical electronic circuits. VO3063 optiosolators are typically used to trigger triacs and/or power SCRs for various industrial applications, such as electric motor speed control, motor starting, lighting and other auto switchgear control.

VO3063 optoisolators can also be used for industrial lighting control. By controlling the on-off switching of the electrical circuit controlling the lights, the intensity of the lights can be controlled without creating any interference. This is especially useful in areas where lighting cannot otherwise be controlled due to interference from other equipment.

VO3063 optoisolators are also used in data communications, alarm systems, synchronous motors, and unmanned gate operation. In data communications, optoisolators are used to isolate sensitive signals between transmission and receiving sections of communication equipment. In alarm systems, optoisolators are used to trigger sounders, visual alarms and various outputs when triggered. In synchronous motors, optoisolators are used to control the operation of a rotor in a synchronously running system. In unmanned gate operation, optoisolators are used to detect persons or objects approaching gates and open the gate accordingly.

Working Principle

The VO3063 optoisolator works by isolating the 5 to 12 VDC logic signals and providing a low voltage, low speed on/off signal. The input signal corresponds with the opto coupler’s photocell, which generates a photoelectric current when exposed to light. This current passes through a potentiometer and is then sent to the output, where it triggers a transistor, triac or power SCR. This in turn drives the load connected to the output.

The optoisolator works on a direct current (DC) basis, meaning that the output voltage is proportional to the input voltage. It is important to use the correct resistor values in order to maintain the correct current flow and ensure proper operation. When used to trigger triacs and power SCRs, the optoisolator must be used in conjunction with current transformers, as the input voltage must be matched to the output voltage of the triggers.

Additionally, the optoisolator may be used in conjunction with zero-crossing detector circuitry, for applications which require a zero-crossing optoisolator. When a zero-crossing optoisolator is used, the input signal is detected at the zero-crossing point of the active power line. This helps to reduce interference from surrounding loads and prevent cross coupling between the active and reactive power signals.

VO3063 optoisolators offer reliable, high speed data transmission and switch dissipations of 0.5 W. Furthermore, they feature short-circuit protection, arc suppression, and are RoHS compliant. When used properly, these optoisolators provide reliable, interference-free operation in a variety of industrial control applications.
