Optoisolators, or Optical Couplers, separate two circuits electrically by employing an optical barrier to transmit signals between them. By creating a physical separation between the two systems, Optoisolators guard sensitive circuitry from the effects of high voltage and noise interference. One of the most common type of optoisolators are Triac, SCR Output, and one of the most popular devices in this series is the VO4156H-X006.

The VO4156H-X006 is designed to enable high speed switching in both analog and digital circuits. It’s a fast, low cost optocoupler with a minimum of component requirements and an internal hysteresis of +10%, which provides reliable switching without false operation. It has a low forward voltage of 1.2V @ IF= 20mA, and it offers blocking protection from 750V peak. It also has an operating temperature range between 0 and +70°C.

One of the most common applications for the VO4156H-X006 are switching power supplies, motor control circuits, digital logic outputs, and pulse generators. It can also be used in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as computer and telecommunications equipment and Audio/Video equipment. The internal construction of the VO4156H-X006 is based on a Triac SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) output, which, when used in isolation of the controlling circuit, will provide long-term circuit operation and protection from high voltage spikes.

The VO4156H-X006 works by relying on a light emitting diode (LED) to emit light which is then detected by a photo detector, or photoconductor.
