Optical Sensors - Photodiodes have traditionally been used for electronic scanning and detection in a variety of industries since introducing visible light-sensitive diodes to the electronics industry in the 1930s. While there have been a number of different applications for photodiodes over the past eight decades, the recent introduction of the VTP1232H photodiode has expanded the usage of such devices exponentially. This article aims to discuss the application field and working principle of the VTP1232H photodiode.
The VTP1232H is a highly sensitive visible light-sensitive p-type silicon-based photodiode designed for use in optical communications. Comparing to the traditional inorganic photodiodes, the VTP1232H exhibits a much wider range of visible light sensitivities whilst consuming a fraction of the power. As a result, the VTP1232H is capable of detecting even the minutest fluctuations in visible radiation, making it suitable for applications such as solar cell components, ultraviolet detection, light emitting diode testing, optical sensors in medical instruments, and optical detection in security systems.
The VTP1232H contains a Si photodiode as the main active component, which can convert visible light into electrical signals. Its overall sensitivity covers from the near infrared of 400nm to the near ultraviolet of 800nm, and it is sensitive to both intensity and wavelength. It has a very high quantum efficiency of approximately 95%, meaning it can respond to a wide range of radiation, making it highly suitable for a variety of applications.
The working principle of the VTP1232H is mainly based on the incident photons being absorbed by the active material, generating an electron and hole pair. The number of electron-hole pairs created is proportional to the amount of incident light, thus producing a photocurrent. The response time of the device is typically in the range of several microseconds, making it suitable for most time-dependent measurements. Additionally, the VTP1232H works over a wide temperature range, allowing it to be used in a magnitude of applications across a variety of fields.
