The X40420V14-AT1 Supervisor IC is a microprocessor reset and power control device that incorporates many integrated features to improve system reliability and protection. It is designed using a combination of analog and digital logic to provide a low voltage and low power supervisor product tailored for automotive application design.

Application Field and Working Principle

The X40420V14-AT1 is applicable to automotive applications such as powertrain and body control systems. It is used to prevent system reset and supply transformer shutdown due to over-current, short-circuits, excessive temperature, and power failure. The X40420V14-AT1 is designed for automotive automotive engine control systems and consists of three functional blocks: watchdog timer, voltage supervisor, and power supply controller. The watchdog timer can detect system freezes due to software faults and initiate a reset; the voltage supervisor monitors supply voltage to detect under-voltage conditions and protect against supply voltage transients; and the power supply controller monitors its inputs and outputs, and provides current limiting protection against over-current faults.

The X40420V14-AT1 supervisor IC provides the fastest reset response time available, and its auto-clearing feature allows it to cycle through the reset pulse until the system is operational. It also features an integrated temperature sensor that can detect both negative and positive temperature deltas to protect against extreme temperatures. The temperature sensors can be configured for either fail-safe or fail-open reset operation.

For improved system reliability, the X40420V14-AT1 supervisor IC also provides over-voltage monitoring and protection, input surge protection, and thermal shutdown. The over-voltage protection feature allows for setting of a maximum voltage threshold to prevent damage from high-voltage supply transients. The input surge protection feature allows the device to detect inrush current caused by power supply startup and allows the system to continue operation until the inrush current is safely discharged. The thermal shutdown feature prevents damage from excessive temperatures by limiting system operation until the device cools down to safe operating temperatures.

The X40420V14-AT1 offers integrated features such as run enable, Sleep Mode, and Holdoff Mode to provide system designers with additional flexibility and protection. The run enable feature allows the designer to configure the supervisor IC to enable or disable system operation under certain conditions; Sleep Mode allows system operation to be delayed at power-on, while the Holdoff Mode feature limits system operation until a prescribed level of external voltage is present at the device.

The X40420V14-AT1 supervisor IC is built on an advanced process technology to minimize power consumption, maximize system reliability, and reduce overall system cost.
