Working Principle

The X4045M8IZ-2.7A has two input pins, VDD and VDDQ, to detect system supply voltage. The two inputs are connected in series, so when the voltage at the VDD pin exceeds the trigger level, it will activate the supervisor device and power-on-reset (POR) will occur. Whenever the voltage at the VDDQ pin exceeds the second trigger level, the device will again begin to function.

The supervisor can be configured to operate in one of four modes—asserted reset, cycle-by-cycle current monitoring, power-on-reset timeout, or a combination of any of the three. The device also has an integrated over-voltage monitor circuit to detect system power supply voltage levels. Additionally, the supervisor has an internal timer which controls the reset timeout period.

The unit is also capable of cycle-by-cycle current monitoring. This feature enables the supervisor to monitor and detect excessive current consumption levels seen in the system power supply and will then assert a reset signal to to shut down the system.

In the voltage step-up control mode, the supervisor can be used with a power field effect transistor (FET) and other circuit components to increase the system voltage slowly to the desired level. This ensures that any power related issues are isolated and does not cause an unexpected reset condition. Finally, the X4045M8IZ-2.7A has an over temperature monitor which will cause a reset signal to be asserted in response to detecting an abnormal temperature increase.
