.PMIC - Supervisors
PMIC (Power Management IC) supervisors provide robust, low-cost overvoltage protection for systems by monitoring voltage inputs and generating a reset signal if any input signals exceed a preset threshold. In particular, X5165S8 is a case of PMIC supervisor that has 4 overvoltage protection (OVP) channels and each channel is adjustable with two external voltage divider resistors.
Application Field
Utilizing the adjustable OVP threshold and the reset functionality of X5165S8, wide range of applications are enabled. There are three applications that X5165S8 fits.
1. Overpower Protection on USB & SATA
Providing a secure USB connection, use of supervisors is necessary to protect users’ equipment and the host computer. X5165S8 works perfectly in this application field. By using the adjustable OVP thresholds, X5165S8 is able to protect the equipment from overtemperatures and overvoltage via resetting the current to 0.
2. Overvoltage Protection on Microcontroller
It is a microcontroller supervisor power management IC that helps in overvoltage protection of microprocessor cores in system-on-chips. It uses OVP channels to monitor the microcontroller core and reset it if an overvoltage condition occurs, eliminating the potential for system malfunction.
3. Battery Protection
In battery powered systems, X5165S8 can be set up to monitor the battery voltages, and reset the system in case if the battery voltage becomes too high or too low. This is useful in preventing damage to the battery that can be caused by overvoltage and can also help in preserving battery life due to the reset functionality.
Working Principle
X5165S8’s OVP channels are adjustable with two external divider resistors. There is a constant current source, providing a voltage reference to the adjustable OVP threshold. Any voltage higher than the adjustable OVP threshold across the current source will trigger the reset signal.
In sleeping mode, the OVP threshold of X5165S8 is turned off. This helps in reducing power consumption. When the system is powered on, the OVP threshold is adjusted and the IC is ready to detect any overvoltage on its channels.
X5165S8 also has an external reset input, which can be used to provide additional reset control from other devices. The reset signal from this input will be combined with the reset signal from X5165S8, so that both signals must be present to generate the reset output.
