RFI and EMI shields are built with a combination of contacts, fingerstock, and gaskets that help mitigate electromagnetic interference and radio frequency interferences. The primary purpose of these shields is to shield an electronic component or circuit from unwanted signals that can cause malfunctions. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) occurs when electromagnetic radiation passes from one source to another, creating uncontrolled current or voltage in a component. Radio frequency interference (RFI) occurs when radio frequency energy is unintentionally transmitted from one electronic device to another, also causing undesirable current or voltage in a component. Contacts, fingerstock, and gaskets are a few of the components used to construct an effective RF/EMI shield.
The fingerstock material is a zinc-plated steel, used to create electrical contacts. It is springy and heat-treated with several ridges, providing a resilient, high-quality contact force. A key feature of fingerstock is that it can be used to either form a perfect flat plane connection or to provide an edge contact for PCBs. It is also ideal for applications where contact pressure must remain constant, such as a power connection.
Fingerstock is used in RFI shielding applications because of its ability to form a complete electrical barrier. It ensures that any unwanted electromagnetic radiation is blocked from entering the circuit or component. In addition, its high-quality contact force ensures the signal remains within the parameter for which it was designed.
Gaskets are used for shielding applications because they are a type of electrical isolation material. They are made from non-conductive material such as plastic, rubber, and fiber, and are designed to provide a physical barrier between two conductive surfaces, such as a circuit board and the metal casing of the device. Gaskets reduce the electromagnetic radiation that can penetrate through the device, thus protecting the circuit from interference.
Contact material, like fingerstock, is used for RF and EMI shielding applications due to its high capacitive quality. It is designed to form a strong electrical connection between two strips of metal, creating a barrier to any unwanted signals that may try to pass through. Contact material also reduces the resistance between two points, so that current can easily flow between them without resistance.
When these components are used in combination, they work together to form a complete contact and shield system. Fingerstock provides a strong electrical barrier between the PCB and the metal casing, while the gaskets reduce the electromagnetic radiation that could penetrate the device. Finally, contact material is used to form a contact barrier between two surfaces, preventing resistive current flow between two RF or EMI sources.
By using a combination of contacts, fingerstock, and gaskets, RFI and EMI shields can effectively shield an electronic component or circuit from unwanted signals, protecting it from interference and reducing the risk of malfunction. These shields are essential for a variety of electronic devices, providing both safety and reliability.
