Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are polarized, fixed capacitors with the most electrical capacitance per unit volume of any presently available capacitors. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are routinely supplied in a series of radial or snap-in package styles and voltage ratings from 2.5 to 1000 volts. Aluminum electrolytic capacitor construction begins with a three-layer electrochemical system. The anode is an aluminum plate, traditionally formed as a foil, with an oxide layer. The anode oxide layer forms the dielectric in the capacitor, and its high effective surface area along with the high dielectric constant of aluminum oxide, provides a very small size, high capacitance capacitor. The cathode is a solid metal cathode with an electrolyte typically an aqueous solution of organic additives. Between the anode and the cathode, is the separator, a paper/foil combination. The separator material is saturated with the electrolyte to create a barrier and act as a conductive material.

The 159LBB025M2DD aluminum electrolytic capacitor is used in an assortment of electronic appliances. It is typically used in a circuit to help filter out noise and ripple from a power supply, allowing a relatively constant DC voltage to be applied to the load. It also helps modify and stabilize the signals in various appliances such as radio receivers, audio equipment and camera flash circuits. This Aluminum electrolytic capacitor has a working voltage of 25V and a capacitance of 33µF.

The capacitor works on a basic principle of electric charges, similarly to a battery, where positive and negative charges are separated within two connected electrodes and insulated by a dielectric material. As the capacitor gets charged the voltage prompts the positive charges to accumulate on one of the electrodes, while the negative charges accumulate on the other. This occurs due to the operation of the physical and chemical processes of the materials from which it is constituted (the anode and the capacitor). As this process continues, the quantity of electricity stored in the capacitor increases, and the electric potential difference between the electrodes rises.

This movement of electricity between electrodes generates a reaction current until the electric potential becomes equal between the two. At this point, the capacitor is said to be charged and will continue storing electricity until the charge on both electrodes becomes equalized. The total capacitance of a capacitor is measured by the energy required to fully charge it, a prototype having an energy equivalent to the charge of a single volt applied to a one farad capacitance.

The 159LBB025M2DD aluminum electrolytic capacitor is able to withstand a higher voltage than elastomeric capacitors, that if exceeded, could cause the elastomeric capacitor to break down and create a leakage current.
