Radio-frequency (RF) evaluation and development board kits are designed to assist in the design and development of RF applications, systems, and components. The kits provide the necessary tools for testing the performance of the system, board and component, and, in some cases, provide the capability to manage the development of the system and board.

In order to evaluate RF systems the kit should provide a number of functions depending on the type of system and board. For example, a radio-frequency (RF) evaluation and development kit for a cellular phone should include the capability to test the optimum transmitting and receiving frequencies, the signal-to-noise ratio, and the power output, as well as the ability to monitor the performance of the system over time, or to provide support for software or firmware development.

The board should also be equipped with oscilloscope probes, voltmeter probes, and a multimeter. Additionally, depending on the board, the kit may include all the necessary components for setting up an Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) system, which can be used for testing the performance of the system and its various components. The kit will also provide a means to patch the circuit boards together to ensure that they meet the required specification limits.

For development purposes, the board should include the necessary tools for debugging the firmware and software such as debuggers, simulators and software development tools. It is also helpful to have an onboard Debug Port (DB9) which can be used to connect to a PC for debugging purposes.

For wireless systems, the kit should provide support for the latest in wireless standards such as WiFi and Bluetooth. It should also include the necessary driver software, chip programming software and software development kits for developing and debugging wireless applications.

To meet the desired performance requirements, the kit should include specific features that allow for the design of the system to fit the exact application. In 1963, Harris Corporation developed its first RF development and evaluation kit, the Harris Field Kit.
