TVS - Diodes: 1KSMB18 Application Field and Working Principle
TVS (transient voltage suppressors) diodes, also known as surge protection diodes, are diodes with capacitance characteristics that are specially adapted to protect any electrical device from being damaged by high overvoltage and overcurrent. They provide a short-term boost to the voltage/current of a device to protect and lessen the chance of permanent damage. Their applications can be found in the protection of a system or component from possible damage caused by electrostatic discharge, lightning strike, or power line surge. 1KSMB18 is a type of TVS diode with a variety of uses because of its features.The 1KSMB18 diode is a unidirectional device which can provide repetitive off-state peak pulse power dissipation of 1500W at 10µs pulse width. The device also has a peak pulse current of up to 30A with a standoff voltage rating of 18V and a breakdown voltage rating of 15V. The maximum peak pulse current should not exceed 30A. The leakage current is very low and the operating temperature is – 55°C to +150°C.A 1KSMB18 diode is generally used in telecommunications equipment, industrial control systems, lighting fixtures, automotive electronics, consumer electronics, and any other electronic device in need of surge protection. It can be used for inrush current protection, line over-voltage protection, surge protection, ESD (electro-static discharge) protection, and lightning protection. The operation of a 1KSMB18 diode is based on the principle of p-n junction diode. When a positive voltage is applied to the device, it blocks the current and behaves as an open switch. In this state, the diode is commonly called “off-state”. When the applied voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the device, it starts conducting. This is also referred to as the “on-state” of the diode.In the off-state, the 1KSMB18 diode can withstand a large surge current up to a certain maximum value. The diode has a high breakdown voltage rating and thus, works as a clamp to the applied voltage. When the applied voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage rating, the device starts conducting and dissipates the energy of the surge. The energy of the surge is dissipated by the thermal effect produced in the device.Apart from its use for surge protection, the 1KSMB18 diode can also be used in ESD protection applications. In ESD protection applications, the device works by shunt-ing the charge away from the device and to ground. The diode can only withstand an ESD pulse until its breakdown voltage. Higher breakdown voltage devices can be used for higher ESD protection.In addition, the 1KSMB18 diode can also be used as a back-up for short-circuits and overcurrent conditions. In such applications, the device is used to shunt away the excess current and restore the circuit to its normal conditions.In conclusion, the 1KSMB18 diode is a very useful electronic component, widely used in a variety of applications for surge protection, ESD protection, and overcurrent protection.
