1N4901 is a unilateral Zener diode widely applied in various technical fields. It has closely related performance indexes such as nominal breakdown voltage, noise suppression and surge suppression, as well as temperature coefficient for voltage and zener impedance, making it an ideal choice for circuit design engineering.
1N4901 is mainly used in voltage regulator, voltage clamping circuit, radio, computer and other equipment. There are two main characteristics of 1N4901 which make it suitable for these applications. The first is its reverse breakdown voltage, known as its zener voltage, which is between 5.1 V and 58 V. It defines the amount of material that can pass when the device conducts in reverse bias. When the test voltage applied to the device is lower than the zener voltage, the device will remain in an off state, whereas if the test voltage is higher than the zener voltage, the device will enter the conduction state. The second important characteristic of 1N4901 is its low dynamic impedance, a feature that enables it to conduct an abundant current.
The working principle of 1N4901 is based on the tunnel effect: When the test voltage is greater than the zener voltage, electrons will be accelerated across the junction in the reverse direction, and because of the high electric field strength, some electrons are able to overcome the potential barrier in the junction and tunnel through. This is the Zener tunnel effect and provides the main conduction of 1N4901. Because of this effect, 1N4901 can maintain a stable voltage independent of current, temperature, and other environmental factors, making it an ideal choice for voltage regulation.
Apart from providing voltage regulation or surge suppression, 1N4901 also finds great applications in emergency power supply and the recovery of data from memories. It can be used in emergency power supply for cars, mobile phones, personal digital assistant (PDA) and other applications. Additionally, 1N4901 is often used to recover data from memories after power failure. It is a reliable device of choice that typically won’t fail when data needs to be retrieved from a memory.
