1N4910A Working Principle
The 1N4910A Zener diode is designed to operate at a very specific range of voltages, between 4.7V and 5.3V. In the forward bias mode, which is the usual mode of operation, the voltage drop across the diode is constant and is dependent upon the Zener voltage which is specified by the manufacturer. The Zener voltage is typically selected to match the required voltage across a load as closely as possible.
In order to operate correctly, the 1N4910A requires a certain level of current to flow through it. If the voltage across the load goes above the Zener voltage then the current which is allowed through is reduced, keeping the voltage across the load temporary level. When the load changes, the current through the diode must also change in order to keep the voltage constant. This is achieved by varying the forward biasing of the diode in order to maintain the current and thus the voltage across the load constant. This is known as dynamic biasing and allows the 1N4910A to operate well in a range of environments.
