Introduction

1N4905A rectifier diode is a fast recovery time, low power loss and low forward voltage drop diode. It is especially suitable for high frequency rectification as it can operate in temperatures from -55℃ to + 125℃. It also has reverse peak current and power dissipation capability for medium current.

Working Principle

1N4905A rectifier diode works in two directions. When the direction of current is from anode to cathode, it is in the forward conducting direction where the forward voltage drop across it is low and the current is limited to a certain level. When the direction of current is from cathode to anode, the diode will reach its Zener voltage, Zener breakdown. Under this condition the voltage drop doesn’t change with the change in current and the diode will act as a constant voltage source. The easiest way to illustrate the working principle is to look at the simple circuit made of 1N4905A rectifier diode and a battery.

As shown in the circuit the diode is connected between the positive and the negative terminal of the battery. When the switch is open the diode behaves in the reverse-bias direction when voltage across it is higher than Zener voltage. When the switch is closed, the current will be allowed to pass throgh the diode and the voltage across it is limited to the Zener voltage.
