Application Field
1N4908 Zener diode can be used for various functions in different kinds of circuits. Working Principle
A 1N4908 Zener diode is constructed using a p – n junction. When a normal p – n junction is connected in a forward bias (positive voltage to the p region and negative to the n region), the junction behaves like an ordinary diode and it allows electrons to flow through it. When a 1N4908 is connected in a reverse bias, a low current flows through the diode. This reverse current is called the “zener current” and is proportional to the applied voltage over the junction.
When the applied voltage is increased beyond the “breakdown voltage”, the zener current increases drastically and the junction behaves like an ideal zener diode. The breakdown voltage of 1N4908 can range from 1.5 to 41 V, depending on the selection of the particular device. At the breakdown voltage, the device conducts for a wide range of voltage levels and is thus used for operating as a voltage regulator.
It is also important to note that 1N4908 Zener diode generates a small amount of noise because of the breakdown current. This noise can cause interference in other parts of the circuit involving the 1N4908, thus a noise filter must be used within the circuit to prevent this issue.
