1N4924 Application Field and Working Principle

The 1N4924 is a Zener diode composed of a chip of single Zener unit that can function as voltage regulators, voltage references and uniformity of voltage networks. It is very useful in many electronic circuit applications. In this article, an overview of the application fields and the working principle of the 1N4924 is given.

The 1N4924 has a wide range of application fields, from consumer electronic products to industrial, military and space related applications. It is commonly used as voltage regulator, to maintain a certain voltage level in the circuit and in order to proper functioning of the circuit components. It is also frequently used as voltage reference, since the Zener diode can provide a stable reference voltage over a wide range of ambient temperatures and load conditions.

In addition, the 1N4924 is used as a voltage stabilizer in voltage networks, providing uniformity of the voltage by regulating the voltage levels, or as a clipper in pulse rectifier. Moreover, it is also commonly used in voltage isolation circuit, over-voltage protection circuit, sharp-cutoff circuit and other similar applications.

The 1N4924 works on the principle of reverse bias breakdown of a P-N junction, which gives it the ability to maintain a constant voltage at the junction even if there is a change in the applied external voltage. The Zener diode acts as a barrier and not allow any current to pass forward until the applied voltage reaches the Zener voltage (Vz) at which theres a breakdown of the diode and afterward it acts as a short circuit & allows the current to pass freely within certain limit.

When the applied voltage across the Zener diode is increased from a lesser value than the breakdown voltage (Vz) to a higher one, the current flow through it increases exponentially and when the applied voltage is returned back to a lower value, current flow through the diode is cut off again. This increase in current, however, is limited by the Zener impedance (Zz).

The Zener diode is thus able to maintain a constant voltage at its junction, giving it its voltage regulation capability, by diverting all the surge currents which are higher than a certain limit to the output, thus preventing the damage to the electronic components from the surge.

In summary, the 1N4924 has a wide application range in many electronic circuit applications, mainly as a voltage regulator, reference and stabilizer. It works on the principle of reverse bias breakdown of a P-N junction, enabling it to maintain a constant voltage at the junction.
