Working Principle

When reverse voltage is applied to the diode (1N5253BTR), the depletion region width increase, creating a low resistance. When the peak reverse voltage reaches the Zener breakdown voltage the larger amount of current starts to flow through the device and voltage across the device is clamped at the Zener voltage. This steep increase in the current creates a high power dissipation and produces thermal stability in voltage regulation, regardless of the input voltage.
