TVS - Diodes, or Transient Voltage Suppression Diodes, are an integral form of ESD protection in today’s electronics. Much like a Zener diode, a TVS diode will conduct current in either direction through it, depending on the voltage applied to its terminals. This capability generally results from their having a lower breakdown voltage than a Zener diode. 1N6173 is one of the most popular and commonly used TVS diode series that offer reliable protection for ESD sensitive ICs and devices from destructive electrostatic discharge (ESD) transients. Featuring high ESD protection performance and low capacitance, the 1N6173 series provides comprehensive protection from high-energy transient voltage excursions on signal and data line.The 1N6173 series are available with a choice of one of five different breakdown voltages (5V - 15V), and are all available in either an SMA or a DO-214AC-2 package. This series have a fast response time with a maximum clamping voltage that is within 10V - 40V, making them ideal for high-speed transmission lines.When it comes to the TVS diodes working principle, it is very easy to understand. In general, the inrush of an ESD charge can exceed tens or even hundreds of amps, which is far beyond what the normal components can withstand. Fortunately, thanks to the TVS diode, it can easily absorb or clamp the Transient voltage excursions of both positive and negative polarity. This transient voltage is then dissipated across the junction, allowing only the minimum current to flow into the protected electronic device. In its basic form, the 1N6173 consists of a PN junction that is configured to clamp the momentary voltage surges. When the positive or negative voltage spikes rise too high, the Silicon junction in the diode is immediately triggered and switches on a low resistance forward bias path. This allows the energy to be quickly dissipated as heat, diverting it away from the device.It is also very important to note that once the energy has been clamped, the diode\'s resistance slowly returns to its normal state in a matter of nanoseconds. This process is called "flyback," and ensures that the device is not damaged by the transient voltage. In addition, the 1N6173 series also boasts a low junction capacitance, offering a high level of performance even in high-speed applications.
