1N827 Application Field

1N827 diodes are also known as Zeners and are used primarily as voltage regulators in electronic circuits. 1N827 Working Principle

1N827 diodes work on the principle of the Zener breakdown effect. Under normal conditions, the diode works like a ‘one-way gate’, allowing current to flow in only one direction. However, when the voltage across the diode exceeds its reverse breakdown voltage, the current is allowed to flow in the opposite direction. This breakdown voltage is known as the Zener voltage and it is this voltage which makes the diode useful as a voltage regulator.

The Zener breakdown in a 1N827 diode occurs when the voltage difference becomes large enough for the electrons to cross the depletion zone and flow freely from the p-type material to the n-type material. This establishes a reverse current flow which counteracts the forward current, thus controlling and regulating the voltage.

The reverse breakdown voltage of a 1N827 diode is generally between 5V and 12V. The temperature of the diode also plays an important role in controlling the breakdown voltage. The higher the temperature; the lower the breakdown voltage. This can be accounted for by the fact that at higher temperatures, the mobility of the electrons increases, thus resulting in the Zener breakdown occurring at a lower voltage.
