Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) is a kind of product used to protect electrical equipment from lightning strikes, power surges and other dangerous electrical events. The basic design consists of two electrodes separated by a sparkgap filled with an insulating medium. When there is an over-voltage surge, the arrester acts to limit the voltage spike and avoid further damage.

Surge protective device (SPD) is part of the gas discharge tube arrester. It’s an electrical equipment used to protect the power system and other electrical devices from over-voltage surges. The principle of SPDs can be divided into two parts: Voltage Limiting (VL) and Current Limiting (CL).

VL part of SPD is designed to limit the voltage by reducing the voltage difference of two long wires when it receives a surge of electricity. CL part of SPD is designed to limit the current by allowing higher levels of voltage spikes to open the sparkgap. When the voltage exceeds the maximum operational value, the sparkgap will open and the voltage will be lowered. This process can prevent further damage while providing protection from dangerous electrical events.

The SMC-RPLF is a non-polar, reverse-polarity-resistor-arranged, gas discharge tube arrester. This type of arrester is used for medium to high voltage applications and is available in a wide range of capacitances from 10 kV to 45 kV. The SMC-RPLF is designed with a metal oxide varistor (MOV) inside a sealed glass tube which is covered with a metal shell for electrical isolation. The MOVs provide the voltage-limiting and current-limiting functions while the MOV’s mechanical construction provides a more uniform field of protection against surge currents.

The SMC-RPLF is designed with two categories of working principle: high voltage utilization group and low voltage utilization group. The High Voltage Group discharges a spark gap and a metal oxide varistor; while the Low Voltage Group discharges a spark gap and a metal oxide layer. Both of them provide the protection function by not allowing the surge current to reach the sensitive devices.
