Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are the most popular form of transient voltage protection to be used for sensitive electronic systems. They works as an open circuit when an overvoltage occurs, and the absorbed current and energy dissipate through the arc inside the GDT. It is one of the most widely used forms of surge arresters across various industries.RPLF is the abbreviation of the Resistor Point Layer Field. This type of arrestor is primarily used for medium voltage, typically in the 10 to 35kV range. The device is composed of two active parts, a gas filled spark gap and a point layer resistor and cap. The two parts act in concert with each other to lower the overall resistance in the circuit when there is a surge voltage.The spark gap has a floating rod element with a wide gap. The rod element is normally grounded. When the incoming voltage rises or drops sharply, the rod element is positively charged and will pass current up to a predetermined amount. When the gap is reduced, the current arc suddenly jumps and the spark gap interrupts the arc.The point layer resistor is similar in principle to the spark gap but is generally more reliable. It consists of two metal plates that are insulated from each other, and when the voltage rises there is a potential between the two plates. This potential causes an electric field which reduces the resistance of the point layer resistor, resulting in increased current flow along the line trace, ultimately providing surge protection.The gas-filled spark gaps used to absorb the surge voltage; when the gap is reduced, the current arcs and a spark forms, absorbing the surge voltage. The point layer resistor is then used to provide a more reliable protection as it reduces the resistance when the incoming voltage rises.RPLF arrestors offer superior protection for sensitive electronic systems, as both the surge voltage and potentially damaging transients are absorbed by the arrestors. Their wide operating range allows them to be used with a wide variety of systems.
