Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT)
Gas Discharge Tube, more commonly known as GDT, is an electronic component that have been on the market since the 1950s. It is used to protect electric equipment from spikes in voltage or power surges and lightning strikes. It works by limiting surges in electricity and providing a solid barrier between equipment and electric surges.GDT is mainly used in telecommunications, industrial electrical systems, and data centers. It has three components- an innervous element, an insulator, and a shunt resistor. The innervous element is responsible for providing isolation from the surge voltage and the insulator limits the surge current. The shunt resistor then initiates the charging of the GDT when a voltage surge is felt. GDT is also used in Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt (GFCI) applications and in the implementation of safety devices in industrial and marine installations. GFCI consists of a device that senses a current imbalance between the hot and neutral lines of an electrical circuit. When it detects an imbalance, the GFCI will break the circuit in order to protect people and property from shocks or fires. GDT is also used as a failsafe for the GFCI by helping to reduce failure due to voltage surges. GDT has many applications in the modern world. It is used for protecting electronic systems against power surges and lightning strikes. It prevents overvoltage damage to systems and helps maintain a steady voltage within the system. GDTs are also used in medical equipment, communication devices, household appliances, and automobiles.In recent years, GDTs have seen an increase in popularity due to new developments in the materials used to create them. The working principle of GDT is based on three basic stages- initiation, accumulation and arc extinction. The arc is then accumulated by the insulation of GDT, thus creating a spark gap that separates the surge from the rest of the system. When the voltage plug surpasses the insulation limit, the insulation will accumulates the arc still producing a spark gap. Finally, when the voltage again falls below the insulation limit, the arc extinction occurs and the surge and its associated destructive energy is removed from the system. In conclusion, GDTs are becoming increasingly popular due to their effectiveness in protecting against power surges and lightning strikes. The latest developments in materials have allowed for greater applications and temperature ranges.
