24C01C-E/MS Application Field and Working Principle

The 24C01C-E/MS is an 8-pin serial EEPROM and is one of the most widely used modern serial EEPROMs ( electrically erasable programmable read-only memory ). The 24C01C-E/MS has a 1Kbit capacity and is compliant with I2C (inter-integrated circuit) protocol for data transfer and communication. Various applications where the 24C01C-E/MS can be employed are measurement and control, automotive, consumer electronics, mobile terminals, and communication systems.

The 24C01C-E/MS is fabricated using high quality CMOS technology and is designed to minimize current consumption while offering access times as low as 200 ns. The operating voltage range of this device is 1.8V to 6V, with an operation temperature range of 0⁰ C to 70⁰ C. This device also has an extremely low standby current of a mere 0.2 μA.

The 24C01C-E/MS EEPROM comes with standard features such as write protect, page write, and write control. It is designed for two-wire data transfer and can be accessed in two modes – the incremental address read and random address read mode. The memory size remains the same even if the power supply is interrupted.

The 24C01C-E/MS supports a simple two-wire interface consisting of a Serial Data (SDA) line and a Serial Clock (SCL) line. The SCL line carries the clock signal, while the SDA line carries the data. The device primarily works with a clock signal that is generated by a remote station, thereby allowing synchronization between the data transfer. The clock speed, or frequency, of the 24C01C-E/MS is 100 kHz.

The 24C01C-E/MS generally supports two types of operations – write and read. In write operations, the master first sends a START condition along with the device 7-bit address and the read/write bit set to ‘0’. This enables the transmission of data from the master to the 24C01C-E/MS EEPROM. The master has to then send an acknowledge bit (ACK) from the 24C01C-E/MS EEPROM and then send successive data bits until the page ends. The master should then again end the write operation by sending a STOP bit.

In read operations, the master again sends a START condition followed by a device 7-bit address and the read/write bit set to ‘1’. The 24C01C-E/MS EEPROM then sends out the requested data to the master in 8-bit succession, and after every data byte, it sends an acknowledge signal back to the master. When the read operation is completed, the master sends a STOP signal to the 24C01C-E/MS EEPROM. The 24C01C-E/MS EEPROM then enters the standby mode.
