Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (AEC) are one of the most widely used electronic components in the electronics industry. Also known as polarized capacitors, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are designed to provide an electrical charge from a battery or other power source to another electronic component. This charge can then be stored in the capacitor and used later. AECs use simple electrical principles of capacitance to work.AECs are made up of two metal plates that are submerged in a liquid electrolyte. One plate is an anode (positively charged) and the other plate is a cathode (negatively charged). A voltage is applied to the anode and the electrolyte breaks down into two ions, one of which becomes deposited onto the anode, causing the anode to become insulated from the electrolyte. The ions act as a barrier which prevents the current from flowing back and forth between the two plates, thus storing the electrical charge.Each AEC is marked with symbols, letters, and numbers which indicate its working characteristics; one such example is 25WA1000MEFCG412.5X16. This marking denotes a particular type of aluminum electrolytic capacitor with a capacitance of 1000 microfarads (µF), a maximum operating voltage of 25V, a temperature-sensing range of -25°C to +85°C, and a tolerance of ±10%.
