35.306 covers Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) standards for physical layer frequencies, medium access control techniques, and other components of wireless local area networks (WLANs). These standards are designed to enable regulatory harmonization of WLAN technologies across the globe, while at the same time offering a platform for speedy deployment of new WLAN services with minimum cost and effort.
35.306 is divided into 17 different core specifications. The first four, as formally explained by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), are the following:
- IEEE 802.11—the Physical Layer Protocol
- IEEE 802.11a/b/g—the Medium Access Control (MAC) Layer
- IEEE 802.11h—transmission of antennas at higher power over the 5 GHz radio range

- IEEE 802.11j—Flooring with low-confidence packets
- IEEE 802.11k—Power management on WLANs
- IEEE 802.11n—Using multiple antennas for improved WLAN performance
In addition to these specifications, 35.306 also defines a number of optional features for WLANs. These include Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) for prioritizing high-bandwidth applications on WLANs, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) for easier configuration of access points and devices, and Wi-Fi Direct for peer-to-peer connections that do not require a wireless access point.
