Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, also known as “wet” or “aluminum can” capacitors, are widely used in all kinds of electronic circuits. A typical aluminum electrolytic capacitor consists of two aluminum plates, one a solid foil and the other a porous oxide layer, which is etched and wound into a cylindrical shape. The outer and inner surfaces of the capacitor are usually metallized to ensure electrical contact between the lead wires and the plates. The aluminum capacitor is polarized and has a voltage rating up to several hundreds of volts.

The capacitor is then filled with a water-based electrolyte, which acts as a dielectric medium. This electrolyte, typically a mixture of borates, nitrates and sulfates, enables the capacitor to store an electrical charge.
