Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
An aluminum electrolytic capacitor is an electronic component primarily used in electric circuits for signal buffering, power filtering and energy storage. It is constructed with two aluminum plates possessing conducting oxide layers with a spacer between them. This separates an electrolyte solution that provides the necessary current for capacitor operation. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are available in various types and sizes and are commonly recognized by their cylindrical form. This current breakdowns the oxide layer which acts as a thin dielectric and in the process ions are formed which migrate to the opposite plate. The amount of charge accumulation is thus determined by the potential difference or voltage applied to the plates. In an electric circuit, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are used for signal buffering, filtering or to block high frequency signals. They are also widely used for power conditioning in power supplies and other applications where progressive energy storage is required. In motor controls, they are used to start motors, to regulate motor speed and to regulate EMI (electromagnetic interference). Due to their small size and high energy density, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are also widely used in miniature and portable electronic equipment such as notebook computers, digital cameras, mobile phones and other types of audio visual equipment.
