Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor (also known as an aluminium electrolytic capacitor or simply an electrolytic capacitor) is an electrical component used to store energy temporarily in a circuit. It is a polarized capacitor, predominantly constructed of aluminum, and uses a liquid electrolyte as the medium to store electric charge. The model 50YXG100MEFC10X12.5 is a type of this device.

The anode is insured with an oxide inter-layer, which allows electric charge to pass from the anode to the electrolyte (a salt solution).The electrodes are insulated from each other, but a voltage applied to the capacitor plates causes the oxide layer to break down electrochemically and ions to conduct through the liquid electrolyte. The oxide layer is soon reestablished by the electrolyte, ensuring the capacitor can store electric charge. The capacitance of the capacitor is determined by its surface area and the voltage of the device.

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors have several advantages over other types of capacitors, particularly tantalum electrolytic varieties. The main benefit of the aluminum electrolytic capacitor is its high-capacitance value – in some cases, an aluminum electrolytic capacitor can offer more than 10 times the capacity of a similar-sized tantalum variety. This means that for the same volume of device, a much higher value of capacitance can be achieved.These capacitors are reliable and have a long lifetime, particularly when used at lower temperatures. They also have low regulation and have a fairly low ESR, providing great stability for filtering and other power protection applications.Their main disadvantage is their high self-discharge rate, meaning they cannot be used for long time intervals when power is off. They are also more susceptible to failure if used in high temperatures, requiring expensive systems or careful design considerations when used in these applications.
