The 5KP48C-B is a component of Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diodes, designed for use in circuits that need to protect against electrical surges and/or overvoltage.

The 5KP48C-B is a metal oxide varistor (MOV) type TVS. MOVs are composed of a metal-oxide material with zinc oxide being the main component, the MOV is essentially a variable resistor whose resistance through the oxide varies with the applied voltage. When the voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage, or clamping voltage, of the MOV the MOV quickly transitions from a high resistance state to a low resistance state, essentially clamping the voltage at the breakdown voltage or less.

The 5KP48C-B has a nominal breakdown voltage of 48V, a rated working voltage of 42V, a rated peak pulse current of 65A, an operating temperature range of -55℃ to +125℃ and a maximum peak pulse power in the range of 600W-1000W depending on the degree of overvoltage and applied duration of the surge.

As an MOV transistor device, the 5KP48C-B has no gate or base and the device is entirely passive, relying on the random distribution of electrons across the zinc oxide pellet to produce the desired protection. The resistance of the zinc oxide pellet is what determines the clamping of the voltage that occurs when the voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the 5KP48C-B.

The 5KP48C-B is often used in circuits that demand reliable overvoltage protection without the need for an active switch or voltage control. The main applications are AC/DC converters, motor controllers, solar inverters, power supplies, diodes, transistors, and relays, etc. The 5KP48C-B provides excellent overvoltage protection and allows designers to design circuits with greater reliability and safety.

In AC/DC converters for example, the 5KP48C-B can be used to protect the converter electronics from overvoltages when the input voltage is high or when the switch times are unbalanced, causing the voltage across the converter electronics to exceed the rated voltage of the components. The 5KP48C-B can also be used to protect transient suppression diodes, which can fail due to overvoltages, from high current transients.

In motor controllers, the 5KP48C-B can be used to protect the motor controller electronics from overvoltages caused by rapid inductive or capacitive transients when the motor is switched on or off. This is especially important for motor controllers driving high-power motors or motors that have a large inductive load, as the high current transients can damage components if not properly clamped.

The 5KP48C-B also provides excellent protection against ESD (electrostatic discharge) and EMI (electromagnetic interference) noise.
