Electrolytic capacitors are polarized capacitors whose anode consists of a metal which is able to pass ions through its oxide layer. These capacitors require a positive voltage to be applied to the anode terminals. The anode material passes ions through its oxide layer, forming a conductive path and allowing a current to flow through the component. This current forms an electric field in the electrolyte in front of the anode which, when a negative voltage is applied, causes a reverse current to flow.The most commonly used electrolytic capacitors are those made of aluminum. These capacitors are extremely dependable and suitable for high power applications due to their large capacitance, low leakage current and relatively low cost.
