Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (also known as Al-electrolytic or aluminum electrolyte capacitors) are passive electronic components used in the manufacture of many commercial capacitors. They typically feature very high capacitance values that range from 1 to 2000 microfarads. Although they are inherently stable and reliable, they are also vulnerable to leakage, which can cause permanent degradation in performance.
Application Field
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are primarily used in high-frequency circuits, such as in radio receivers and transmitters. They are also used as voltage dividers, voltage multipliers, and power supplies in consumer electronics, as well as for power supply filtering in computers and servers. In addition, they are often used in switch mode power supplies, electric vehicles, UPSs, and aerospace, military, and medical applications.
Working Principle
An aluminum electrolytic capacitor works by storing electric charge between two foils – a positively charged anode and a negatively charged cathode. An electrolyte is inserted between the two foils and is composed of gelled or liquid material containing ions that migrate through the electrolyte to bridge the two foils. The electrostatic field thus generated can store, and sometimes switch, electric charge.
The capacitor\'s capacitance is determined by the size and shape of the plates, the radius of the anode, the dielectric (electrolyte) between the plates, and the distance between the plates. With increasing voltage applied between the plates, the stored charge reaches a maximum and the capacitor stops storing additional charge.
When current is applied to an electrolytic capacitor, the charged particles in the electrolyte at the anode will travel towards the cathode. This causes an increase in the potential across the capacitor, resulting in a voltage drop. As the capacitor discharges, the electric charge is attracted to the cathode and the capacitance of the capacitor decreases.
The temperature, voltage, and the type of electrolyte used affect the performance of aluminum electrolytic capacitors. To ensure optimal performance, capacitors should be designed and made according to industry standards.
