The AD7706BRU-REEL7 is a complete, low power, 16-bit, sigma-delta analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with integrated input multiplexer, digital offset and programmable gain amplifier (PGA). This product is ideal for applications with multiplexed inputs, medium resolution data acquisition systems, and low power reach in applications. The integrated input multiplexer and low power capability of the AD7706BRU-REEL7 makes it ideal for unattended remote sensing where long battery life is important.The AD7706BRU- REEL7 has two input ranges that are user programmable through the on-chip control logic. The full-scale range is set to either 0V to 2.5V or 0V to 5V using the input range selection pins. The converter has been designed to work in a two or four channel configuration with a maximum channel-to-channel nonlinearity of 1LSB (1 part in 65,536). In addition, the converter incorporates an on-chip PGA with a gain of either 1, 2, 4 or 8. The availble PGA gains can also be programmed via the on-chip control logic. The AD7706BRU-REEL7 features an on-chip digital offset register. This register allows for a user programmable offset adjustment from -1.5V to +1.5V to be made to the selected input range prior to conversion. This functionality can be helpful when the system is expecting a zero-level input signal but the actual signal is above or below that measurement. The offset can be used to balance out the errors caused by this misalignment. The AD7706BRU-REEL7 also incorporates an on-chip temperature sensor, which allows the device to automatically identify and compensate for any drift effects due to temperature changes. This ensures that the ADC has greater accuracy over a wide temperature range and reduces the need for user calibration.The AD7706BRU-REEL7 supports two modes of operation. The normal mode is the preferred configuration when speed is an important factor. Here, the converter samples data at 7k samples/second. If lower power operation is desired, the AD7706BRU-REEL7 features a low power mode, in which the device can sample data at 1k samples/second while consuming 10uA of current. The AD7706BRU-REEL7 utilizes an on-chip oscillator for clock and timing reference. This clock, which typically runs at 4.88MHz, is used to drive the internal analog front-end, digital logic, and on-chip temperature sensing circuits. In addition, the device features both a digital data-ready feature and a digital end-of-conversion pin, which can be used to enable efficient data transfer between the converter and external system. The onboard control logic can be used to configure the AD7706BRU-REEL7 in either a two or four channel configuration, adjust the reference voltage, select the operating voltage range, enable/disable the temperature sensor, set the PGA gains and activate the digital offset register. These settings can be programmed through the 6-bit command interface and 8-bit data interface. The AD7706BRU-REEL7 is available in a 20-pin QSOP package and is capable of operating over a wide temperature range of -40C to +125C. The device also features on-chip self-test functionality. Overall, this product is well suited for applications with multiplexed inputs and medium resolution data acquisition systems.
