The working principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is based on electrochemical energy conversion. When the terminals of the capacitor are connected to a DC source, current flows to the anode. As current flows to the anode, its electrostatic charge increases, as do the charges on the anode and cathode. This creates an electric field between the electrodes which causes the electrolyte to ionize. The resulting ions then flow to the anode, with positively-charged ions attracted to the anode and negatively-charged ions attracted to the cathode. The electrons in the current that initially flows to the anode must pass through the electrolyte, creating an electric current in the electrolyte. This current, combined with the ions in the electrolyte, creates an electric current across the electrolyte. Eventually, a state of equilibrium is reached, with the charges on the electrodes equalized. The total capacitance of the capacitor is now determined by the charge on the plates divided by the voltage. Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors are characterized by a long service life, high capacitance, relatively low costs, and a wide temperature range.
