Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in electronic equipment. They are usually cylindrical in shape and made of aluminum foil as an anode and of paper impregnated with an ion-conducting material as a cathode. An aqueous electrolyte is contained between the two electrodes. The anode foil is formed concentrically around the cylindrical cathode and separated from it by insulating paper. A capacitor made in this manner is of a low cost and has a large physical volume for a given capacity.

There are two main types of aluminum electrolytic capacitors: Conductive polymerized aluminum electrolytic capacitors and foil-wound aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Conductive polymerized aluminum electrolytic capacitors are characterized by their high capacitance per unit volume, low ESR (equivalent series resistance) and long life. Foil-wound aluminum electrolytic capacitors offer a low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and improved ripple current capabilities over standard aluminum electrolytic capacitors. They are primarily used in circuits requiring stable capacitance due to temperature, humidity, and input voltage variations.
