AOZ2262QI-15 Application Field and Working Principle

The AOZ2262QI-15 is a synchronous step-down LED driver/DC-DC converter, designed to deliver high current up to 2.8A with an excellent efficiency up to 95.6%, while keeping low RDS(ON) of 0.11 Ω. It provides a constant output current with a wide input voltage range from 4.5V to 38V. The AOZ2262QI-15 is highly integrated with integrated gate driver, bootstrap diode, low RDS(ON) MOSFET, high accuracy current limit, finite state machine (FSM) to ensure best system performance.

AOZ2262QI-15 can be classified as a PMIC (Power Management IC) Voltage Regulator and more specifically, a DC DC Switching Regulator. The switching regulator functions by controlling the switching of the MOSFETs in the circuit which, in turn, controls the amount of power delivered to the output based on its duty cycle.

Working Principle

The AOZ2262QI-15 is a constant-current source that is suitable for driving LEDs in a bidirectional buck-boost configuration. The AOZ2262QI-15 achieves its accurate current limit by implementing dual-loop (voltage mode and Current mode) control. In addition, the Primary-Side Regulation (PSR) and Capacitor Discharge (CD) techniques are used for improving system efficiency. In order to guarantee the current regulation accuracy, the switching frequency is designed to be adjustable from 500kHz to 2.2MHz, and an integrated Adjustable Soft-Start function can achieve the stable current regulation during system startup.

Load Regulation

When the LED load is constant, the LED forward current is regulated automatically by the AOZ2262QI-15’s voltage loop. The AOZ2262QI-15’s voltage loop is composed of an adaptive voltage feed-forward, a loop compensation filter, a peak current loop, and a current limit loop. The adaptive feed-forward ensures that the output voltage is largely independent of the load current. The loop compensation filter provides low frequency control and stability. The peak current loop controls the peak current of the MOSFET switches to the load. Lastly, the current limit loop determines the maximum current that can flow through the MOSFET gate, thus limiting the output current.

Reverse Voltage Protection

One of the key features of the AOZ2262QI-15 is its load-dump protection, which uses the HV internal start-up circuit to protect the device from reverse input voltage applied to the system. The internal start-up circuit will detect the abnormal voltage and will stop the power saving mode until the reverse input voltage is removed.

Soft-Start

The on-chip Soft-Start function of the AOZ2262QI-15 turns on the circuit and ramps up the turn-on current slowly, thus avoiding the inrush current charging of the output capacitor. This Soft-Start function can be set to predefined current limit and timing through external resistors.
