AT29C256-12PC is a 256K X 8 CMOS EPROM (Electrically Programmable Read-Only Memory), commonly used in embedded systems and industrial control applications such as embedded controllers, microcontrollers and digital signal processing. The AT29C256-12PC is a 28-pin DIP (Dual In-Line Package) integrated circuit (IC) packaged with a wide-range operating temperature range of 0°C to +70°C and also offers access to lower memory addresses than comparable devices.
AT29C256-12PC has several features that make it well suited for embedded system applications. It has an accessible erase/program voltage of +12V, which is compatible with 3V and 5V systems. It also has a wide range of standard operating voltages, and can be operated at temperatures as low as -40°C and up to +85°C.

AT29C256-12PC\'s working principle is simple. In writing (programming) mode, a series of pulses sufficient to bring a selected cell in the circuit to its normal or active state can be applied to the Address lines of the device. Once the accessing of particular cell is successful, a current is passed through the cell, via the data line of the device, which sets it to the desired state. During the program process, the located address and the Data is latched in the address and data latch of one of the gates of the cell which locks the data in place, thus making it a non-volatile memory.
In read/readback mode, the applied address is compared with the stored value. If the two matches, then the data is extracted from the cell and can be made available for further processing or application. If the two addresses disagree, the cell is reset to the originally-stored data. This process is repeated for each memory cell in the device until the device has been read successfully.
AT29C256-12PC can be programmed and erased up to 10,000 times, ensuring its long-term reliability. Its combination of low power, wide temperature range and error checking capabilities makes it an excellent choice for embedded control and industrial applications, in order to provide reliable, long-term data storage.
