Memory can be broadly classified into two categories: volatile memory and non-volatile memory. Amongst non-volatile memory, two technologies are mostly used in the industry, these are Flash and EPROM.

AT29C256-15TI is an electrically erasable and programmable read-only memory (EEPROM), developed by Atmel Corporation. It is a 25-pin integrated circuit (IC) chip which comes in windowed ceramic Dual In-line Package (DIP) or in windowless surface-mount package known as OTP-28(Option One Time Programmable).

AT29C256-15TI stores 256K×8 bytes of data and can be programmed with voltage range of 2.7V to 6V. Its industrial temperature range is from -40°C to +85°C and its extended temperature range is from -40°C to +125°C.

This IC chip has in-built sector protection bits and signature analysis verify algorithm. Moreover it is an ideal replacement for 28pin PLCC EPROM and has a higher operating speed (up to 15MHz). It also features read, write, and compare capability and is reprogrammable with a serial programming algorithm.

The application fields of AT29C256-15TI IC chip include consumer devices, automotive, industrial and healthcare application, where the stored data needs to be constantly updated and stored safely.

In terms of its working principle, AT29C256-15TI IC chip utilizes write/erase cycles which require the voltage of 12V, 6V and 5V during a series of operations known as write cycle. This IC chip can be programmed by either parallel programming or serial programming writes, with the most common being parallel programming.

This IC chip uses a sector organization scheme which divides its total amount of 256K bytes of memory into four sectors. The write operation starts, when the actuator pin is enabled. This pin is used for both write and erase operations.

Sector protection is used when the user does not want to allow write/erase operation in the certain sector of the memory. It is performed by setting a bit to 1 position within the protection register.

AT29C256-15TI IC chip is also equipped with a low-voltage detect circuitry which can identify if the applied programming voltage is less than the required threshold. In that case, the device will restrict any further write/erase operation; and thus, data will be preserved.

AT29C256-15TI is an extremely robust non-volatile memory chip with high data retention rates, low power consumption and a long life cycle. Its features, such as sector protection and signature analysis, make it perfect for a number of industrial and medical applications which require data to be stored and preserved for longer periods of time.
