The ATA6870N-PLQW-1 is a lithium-ion/polymer battery-management IC optimized for space-constrained mid-power applications. This integrated circuit offers maximum flexibility and efficiency in the pursuit of excellent system performance, cost efficiency and power savings across a variety of applications. ATA6870N-PLQW-1 enables safe, reliable operation of lithium-ion/polymer batteries, such as three and four series system packs. It offers comprehensive protection and monitoring features, programmable charging and discharging parameters, adjustable cell balancing, temperature sensing, and comprehensive real-time monitoring information.
Application Field
ATA6870N-PLQW-1 is ideal for lithium-ion/polymer battery packs and often employed in applications to adhere to the stringent safety requirements. Specifically, it is designed for use in environments that require regulated outputs and highly regulated input voltages such as mobile phones, notebooks, smart portable devices, wearables, portable radio transmitters, robotic actuators and app-connected systems.
This device is also ideal for automotive scenarios such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) – especially those that demand ultra-low currents for powering sensors and peripherals in long intervals (sleep-mode) without draining primary batteries. Moreover, ATA6870N-PLQW-1 can also be used in emergency lighting systems, industrial wearables, and battery-powered tools and appliances.
Working Principle
The ATA6870N-PLQW-1 uses advanced techniques to protect against overcharge and over-discharge conditions. It is equipped with a wide input range and supports up to 7.5 Li-Ion cells yielding a maximum input voltage of 32.5V. The IC itself is supplied with 5V/10V from the Input VSup rail by the battery cells. The charging process is regulated by an internal regulated Linear Current-Mode (LCM) charger.
According to the battery voltage, the charge current is regulated by the following parameters: a floating Voltage_Set point (VSET) level (4.2V to 4.4V), charge current (CC) proportionately by CC bits, a Overvoltage Protection (OVP) level (5.5V/6V/7V/8V/9V/10V/11V) and a minimum sense resistor (RSENSE) of 30mΩ.
The device also enables safe, reliable operation of lithium-ion/polymer batteries by providing comprehensive protection and monitoring functions. Its highly-integrated approach to system design helps to minimize the component count and board space. Protection against Over-Current Protection (OCP), cell balancing and an Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) are also implemented.
Furthermore, to guarantee a safe charging/discharging process, a series of system thresholds (high/low voltage and temperature) is incorporated in the ATA6870N-PLQW-1. When any of the thresholds is violated, the device immediately issues warning signals and the main charging switch is disconnected. Once the system condition recovers, switching will be resumed.
In addition, the device features intelligence features such as auto-resume charging, low voltage disconnect, fault alerts and watchdog timer. These features combined make the ATA6870N-PLQW-1 a powerful, flexible, and reliable Battery Management System (BMS).
