Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (or "aluminium electrolytic capacitors"), are capacitors that use an electrolyte, typically in the form of liquid, to achieve a larger capacitance than other types of capacitors. The aluminum electrolytic capacitor is composed of two aluminum foil electrodes, which are lined with a moisture-absorbing paper and embedded in a solidified electrolyte with an organic separator. The AVES475M35B12T-F currently available is a solid aluminum electrolytic capacitor, with a capacity of 475mF, rated voltage of 35V and 12*25mm cylindrical shape with radial leads. It is typically used in digital electronic components, audio equipment and computers for high frequency filtering and other purposes.

Application Field

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in various electronic equipment and systems. In power electronics, they are used to decouple, filter, and regulate the supply current. They are also practical for energy storage due to their ability to store and release electric charges. They are increasingly being used in the automobile industry as well. In modern vehicles, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are used to help reduce the electrical emissions emitted by vehicles. Additionally, they are used to reduce the size of electrical systems, such as those employed in hybrid vehicles. In addition, the AVES475M35B12T-F aluminum electrolytic capacitor can be used in high frequency circuits. In audio frequency circuits, it can be used to filter interference caused by other systems, improving the sound quality. It can also be used in power supply circuits for power smoothing, improve the supply system’s power efficiency and also reduce EMI noise.

Working Principle

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor consists of two aluminum foils that have been treated differently. One foil, termed the anode, is constructed from a sheet of pure aluminum that is then etched into a corrugated sheet to increase its surface area. The other foil, termed the cathode, is constructed from aluminum that has been coated with an oxide layer. This oxide layer acts as the dielectric of the capacitor. The two foils are then submerged in an electrolyte solution. This electrolyte solution is mostly composed of water, along with some salts and acids, all of which are electrically conductive. Additionally, some of the electrolyte solutions contain organic solvents, such as ethanol or ethylene glycol, to increase the conductivity of the solution. When an electric voltage is then applied to the capacitor, this causes an electric current to flow in the electrolyte solution. This electric current causes the anode foil to become positive and the cathode foil to become negative. This builds a charge on the metals within the aluminum electrolytic capacitor, with the two electrodes having the opposite polarities. The charge that builds is then stored in the capacitor due to the dielectric barrier created by the oxide layer that exists between the two foils. This charge remains stored until the capacitor is discharged – either intentionally or due to the direction of current being reversed. In conclusion, an aluminum electrolytic capacitor (such as the AVES475M35B12T-F) is a type of capacitor composed of two aluminum foil electrodes, separated by an oxide layer, and immersed in an electrolyte solution. It is mainly used in digital electronic components, audio equipment, and power supply circuits, where it can serve to filter, decouple, and regulate the supply current.
