BAV21 is one of the most popular types of single-diode rectifiers. This semiconductor device has a PN-type structure and has a symmetrical current-voltage characteristic. Application field

BAV21 diode is widely used in many different applications. Working Principle

BAV21 diode has a PN-type structure and has a symmetrical current-voltage characteristic. This structure is composed of two layers of different materials. One of the materials has an extra electron and so is known as n-type material. The other material has an extra hole and so is knows as p-type material. These two layers are known as the anode and cathode.

In the forward bias mode, the anode is at the negative voltage compared to the cathode. When a voltage is applied to the diode, electrons are drawn from the n-type material to the p-type material creating a small current. This current flow in the forward bias mode flows from the anode to the cathode.

In the reverse bias mode, the diode acts as an open circuit, meaning the current will not flow through the diode. In this condition, the voltage applied to the diode is greater than the breakdown voltage, causing the electric field between the two layers to become so large that current would be broken down.

BAV21 diodes are very fast diodes. The fast switching time means that it is ideal for use in high frequency circuits. Additionally, the high forward current and low reverse current ratings make the BAV21 diodes suitable for many different applications requiring protection from overvoltage.
