To that end, evaluation and demonstration boards and kits are used to measure the performance of various components and systems while aiding the development and optimization of those same components and systems. This allows for the optimization of safety, energy efficiency and performance –all critical considerations when designing a battery charger.Among the foundational operations of the BQ24600 battery charger IC is the function of its control variables. This includes the integration of the battery monitoring and temperature sensing features as well as the configuration and set-point register settings. The BQ24600EVM enables the user to adjust and configure the input current limit up to 2A for various battery types. The board also allows for the adjustment of the battery float voltage, in 25mV increments, and the setting of an onboard test switch which can select between a floating and a ground reference point. The board will automatically adjust the input current limit, depending on the connected battery.The BQ24600EVM also offers users robust safety features such as overcurrent protection and overvoltage protection. In the event of an overcurrent being detected the BQ24600 will shut down and will not restart until the fault condition has been corrected. However, these features should always be verified with actual use cases and production sampling.The board also features an internal loop compensation to ensure the accuracy of the output voltage. This is the process of balancing the output voltage across multiple load condition, thus increasing the accuracy of the battery charging system. The BQ24600EVM also offers an FET output driver with independent short-to-battery and short-to-ground protection, which helps to protect the circuits against miswiring and short-circuits.
