To that end, evaluation and demonstration boards and kits are used to measure the performance of various components and systems while aiding the development and optimization of those same components and systems. Among those tools is the BQ24600EVM, an evaluation and demonstration board that allows engineers, developers and lab technicians to assess certain functional parameters of the BQ24600 battery charger IC.The BQ24600EVM utilizes a BQ24600 IC, its associated passive components, and several output connectors. It is designed to facilitate the characterization and validation of the BQ24600 chip as well as to familiarize developers with the product’s features and capabilities. The board’s properties make it useful for applications such as battery charging and/or battery discharging among others.The BQ24600EVM offers many important features that ensure reliable operation of a battery charger system, some of the more prominent features are as follows:• On-board adjustment and configuration of input current limit up to 2A• The ability to trim the battery float voltage in 25mV increments• An onboard test switch that allows the user to select between a floating and a ground refer- ence point• A two-pole 20A NTC metal-film resistor for temperature compensation• Overcurrent protection• Overvoltage protection• Internal loop compensation• FET output driver with independent short-to-battery and short-to-ground protection• Thermal shutdown• Temperature-compensated charge algorithmThe BQ24600EVM is designed to accurately measure the thermal, electrical and performance parameters of the BQ24600 battery charger IC upon power-up and under different load conditions. This allows for the optimization of safety, energy efficiency and performance –all critical considerations when designing a battery charger.Among the foundational operations of the BQ24600 battery charger IC is the function of its control variables. This includes the integration of the battery monitoring and temperature sensing features as well as the configuration and set-point register settings. The BQ24600EVM enables the user to adjust and configure the input current limit up to 2A for various battery types. The board also allows for the adjustment of the battery float voltage, in 25mV increments, and the setting of an onboard test switch which can select between a floating and a ground reference point. The board will automatically adjust the input current limit, depending on the connected battery.The BQ24600EVM also offers users robust safety features such as overcurrent protection and overvoltage protection. In the event of an overcurrent being detected the BQ24600 will shut down and will not restart until the fault condition has been corrected. However, these features should always be verified with actual use cases and production sampling.The board also features an internal loop compensation to ensure the accuracy of the output voltage. This is the process of balancing the output voltage across multiple load condition, thus increasing the accuracy of the battery charging system. The BQ24600EVM also offers an FET output driver with independent short-to-battery and short-to-ground protection, which helps to protect the circuits against miswiring and short-circuits. The board also features thermal shutdown, which will protect the charger and the battery from overheating, and a temperature-compensated charge algorithm to ensure that the battery is charged correctly.Overall, the BQ24600EVM offers a comprehensive and effective evaluation and demonstration board for the assessment of the BQ24600 battery charger IC.
