The BQ25070EVM-740 is an evaluation and demonstration board and kit, used to test the features, performance, and characteristics of TI’s advanced family of Battery Management and Self-Optimizing Chargers specifically designed for single-cell, Li-ion and Li-polymer battery packs. The BQ25070 is an integrated, step-down DC-DC converter and a single-cell linear charger used for charging single-cell Li-ion or Li-polymer batteries. It provides up to 4A of charge current or up to 1A of linear regulator current from a small form factor. The versatility and features of the BQ25070EVM-740 also allow for a variety of applications in the industrial, consumer, and mobile markets.
The BQ25070EVM-740 is comprised of an evaluation module (EVM) and a Battery Cell Characterization Tool (BQTEMPCT) which allows for automated characterization on a single cell. The built-in USB interface on the EVM communicates to a host PC where system testing is performed. The EVM contains a bq25070, a USB-to-I2C interface, and monitoring and measurement devices which allow for system configuration. The EVM also contains one filtered power module for the battery and one for the power supply inputs. The BQTEMPCT includes wire leads, a single-cell holder, temperature measurement badge, and power supply with USB interface. The BQTEMPCT enables easy measurement of the battery cell voltage and temperature when the charger is in various operating states.
The BQ25070EVM-740 features high-efficiency fully integrated topology with low RDS(ON) for maximum efficiency, and has a low operating current of 30 µA. The device offers a range of small-form-factor packages and is suitable for applications without a heatsink. The device\'s protection features include N-channel MOSFET short-to-ground protection, overvoltage protection, thermal protection, over-temperature shutdown, cell overtemperature protection, and battery under-voltage lockout. The device also features step-down DC/DC converter and linear regulated output for improving battery life and optimizing charge current.
The BQ25070EVM-740 working principle involves buck topology with four integrated resistors to set the output voltage. The charge current is monitored through the sense resistor at the output and can be set using the integrated CSPLL current set pin. In addition, the input voltage is regulated by a BuckPWM with integrated linear regulator, allowing for a wide range of input voltage capabilities. When the input voltage drops below a certain level, the BuckPWM automatically shuts down the system, protecting the battery from damage. In addition, the device has an integrated power FET with short-to-ground and overvoltage protection, ensuring the battery is not overcharged.
