C391N is a type of silicon controlled rectifier (SCR). SCRs are thyristors, a type of semiconductor device that comprises four layers of alternating N- and P-type materials (PNPN) and acts as a switch giving either a full on or full off operation of the current flowing through it. An SCR is a three-terminal device with terminals labeled anode, gate, and cathode. Applied voltage at the anode terminal, together with a current, will turn the thyristor on, causing a large current to flow through the device and load. The gate is used to control the current switch through the anode and cathode terminal and the switching cycle is completed when current across the device is zero. It is a unidirectional device, meaning the current will not flow from the cathode to the anode, the switching effect can be reversed by replacing the polarity of current at the anode and cathode terminals.
The C391N application field lies in the industrial electronics, where it is extensively used to control the current and voltage of heating, lighting and other loads. Since it is a three terminal device, it can be connected in several configurations, making it suitable for a range of applications where it is used to control AC or DC loads. It finds various applications in controlling hot water boilers, welding equipment, welders, air conditioning systems, refrigerator motors, centrifugal pumps, and mine hoists. Other practical applications of the C391N include controlling industrial machines such as furnaces and ovens and in controlling automotive components such as spark-plug energy, anti-lock brake systems, brake lights, power windows and windshield wipers.
The working principle of the C391N is twofold; it is used as a switch to ‘start’ or ‘stop’ a current from flowing, as well as to vary the current. When a certain amount of current passes through the gate terminal, the C391N switches from the off-state to the on-state and conducts current. This ‘on-state’ current is controlled by the application of a reversing current at the cathode and anode terminals. Further, the effectiveness of the ‘on-state’ current depends on the constant voltage applied at the gate terminal. The C391N can also be used to regulate current or voltage. This is done by varying the reversing current applied to the anode and cathode terminals. When the current or voltage across its terminals reaches a certain maximum, the C391N shuts off.
In conclusion, the C391N is a type of SCR used in the industrial electronics to control current and voltage of heating, lighting, and other loads. Its working principle is twofold; it is used as a switch when a certain current passes through the gate terminal, and it can also be used to regulate current or voltage by varying the reversing current at the anode and cathode terminals. The C391N has found various applications in controlling hot water boilers, welding equipment, air conditioning systems, refrigerator motors, centrifugal pumps, and mine hoists.
