Thyristors - SCRs refer to silicon controlled rectifiers, which are three-terminal semiconductor devices that allow current to flow in only one direction when they are forward-biased. The SCR is a voltage-controlled switch and the main purpose of an SCR is to switch "ON" and "OFF" either manually or remotely. The C391PB is a 4-quadrant bridge SCR, which is most commonly used in the controlling of AC motors and other AC load applications. It has a controlled gate signal, a controlled rectifier, and two main terminals called AC inputs. It also has two additional terminals called Gate 1 and Gate 2. The C391PB is made up of two elements, a bridge SCR, and a control Thyristor. The bridge SCR consists of four SCRs connected in a bridge configuration and is used for switching on and off the AC load.

When an external control signal is applied to the C391PB, the control thyristor is triggered into conduction and the bridge SCR will switch on the AC load.The current flow in the AC load is then controlled by the gate signal. If the gate signal is removed, the control thyristor switches off and the bridge SCR will switch off the AC load. The C391PB is an ideal device for applications which require fast switching times, high turn-on and turn-off current, and immunity to hiccups (where the load may act as a series inductor).

The working principle of the C391PB can be described in four steps. First, a gate signal is applied to the C391PB and it is biased in a forward direction. The current flowing through the device is then limited by the voltage applied across it. Next, the gate signal is briefly, which causes the control thyristor to trigger into conduction. This will cause the bridge SCR to switch on, allowing current to flow in the AC load. The current flow can then be controlled by varying the gate signal. Finally, the gate signal is removed, which causes the control thyristor to switch off and the bridge SCR will switch off, thus cutting off the current flow in the AC load.

The C391PB is often used in AC load applications like AC motors, resistive loads, and in other control system applications. It has several important advantages compared to other devices such as low voltage and current requirements, high switching speed, and fast turn-on and turn-off capabilities. Moreover, the C391PB is more reliable than other devices and less susceptible to peak inrush currents due to its bridge SCR configuration. As such, the C391PB is a great choice for applications that require fast switching, low power consumption, and reliability.
