Thyristors - SCRs (C391PD)

A thyristor, also known as a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR), is an electronic semiconductor device that controls the flow of electric current using a gate mechanism. Working Principle

The C391PD is a 4-pin, gate-activated SCR. It is constructed from a P-type silicon material with a N-type gate. When the gate is in the non-conducting state, the SCR is off and does not allow any current to flow through it. When the gate is activated or “triggered”, the current can flow through the device. The C391PD also has an LED indicator which allows for visual confirmation of SCR switching and voltage status. In addition to this, the C391PD has a built-in temperature-sensing device that allows temperature and current monitoring.The C391PD has two ways to trigger it - when the voltage across the main terminals (anode and cathode) is above the triggering voltage of the device, the SCR will turn on when the gate is activated. The other method is to “force trigger” the SCR by connecting the gate terminal directly to either the anode or cathode terminal. This will cause the SCR to turn on regardless of voltage. Once the SCR is switched on, it will continue to conduct current until the current falls below a certain “holding” value or until the gate voltage is removed. This holding current helps to ensure that the SCR does not turn off when it should not - for instance, due to a surge in current or voltage.
